WHAT IS Rosacea?

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition characterised by redness, visible blood vessels, and sometimes small, pus-filled bumps on the face. It often affects the central part of the face, including the cheeks, nose, forehead, and chin. Rosacea tends to manifest in episodes of flushing or persistent redness, giving the skin a sunburned appearance.

The exact cause of rosacea is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve a combination of genetic, environmental, and vascular factors. Triggers for rosacea flare-ups can include exposure to sunlight, spicy foods, alcohol, stress, and certain skincare products.

There are different subtypes of rosacea, each presenting with varying symptoms.

HOW IS ROSACEA TREATED?

While there is no cure for rosacea, various treatments can help manage symptoms and reduce redness.

Rosacea is typically managed through a combination of medical treatments and lifestyle adjustments. Topical and oral antibiotics, as well as prescription creams, can help control inflammation and redness. Laser therapy is effective in reducing visible blood vessels, and lifestyle changes, like avoiding triggers such as sunlight and certain foods, can minimise flare-ups. Additionally, gentle skincare routines with hypoallergenic products are recommended. Consulting with a skin specialist is essential to tailor a treatment plan suited to the specific subtype and severity of rosacea in each individual.
